Doing the Work Daily, Celebrating Women in Education

During Women’s History Month,

the community is reminded that women in education propel future generations into success. The educational field employs a majority of women in teaching and school staff roles. Recently, Lion’s Pride Mentoring did a social media post featuring five women who have moved and inspired the organization’s mission and work as educational collaborators.

Aniya Collins is one of Lion’s Pride Mentoring’s very own team members actively helping to implement and facilitate the social-emotional-based mentorship programming.

Students provide feedback on their programming experience quarterly. Overwhelmingly, Aniya’s students report feeling prepared and capable of being successful mentors. They also report enjoying the classroom environment and the Lion’s Pride Mentoring programming.

When asked about specific feedback or suggestions for the Lion’s Pride Mentoring team, one student wrote:

“I just believe everyone needs a mentor, and this program should be at every school! Having someone to support would make you want to pursue your dreams and keep going!”

We asked Aniya to tell us more about her role at Baker College Prep to gain a more well-rounded perspective of her approach to the classroom.

What is your official position at Baker?

I am the Assistant Dean of Students at Baker College Prep, go Bobcats!

What is your favorite thing about your job?

My favorite thing about my job is getting a chance to connect with the student body and see them develop into young adults. In my experience, I’ve had the opportunity to know so many of our scholars and their personalities, stories, goals, and aspirations. Our scholars and their brilliant minds truly impact my experience in education in all of the best ways.

What is one of your greatest accomplishments in education?

One of my greatest accomplishments has been being able to cultivate a positive student experience on our campus. In my role specifically, I organize school-wide events in collaboration with our Student Council that I advise, and a few of our staff stakeholders. Most recently, we just wrapped up Black History Month which included a series of events from a Black History Scholastic Bowl, a “Who Am I?” competition and a Black History Month Assembly. The ongoing participation of these events really brought a sense of community to both our staff and students. I am truly grateful to continue to grow in this work alongside our scholars.
